VandeKamp Tops K-Runk Memorial at Rice Lake Speedway

Rice Lake WI, July 3 – A huge night of racing was held on Thursday night, July 3rd at the Rice Lake Speedway. The Firecracker special featured a spectacular display of fireworks for the fans and the Barron County Relay for Life event was also a part of the show. But the main event was the ninth annual K-Runk Memorial Race for Midwest Modifieds, returning to the Rice Lake Speedway for the first time since 2018. In that twenty three lap main event, Scandia Minnesota's Jason VandeKamp drove to victory and earned $2,323 for his win. Other winners during the very special holiday program included Nick Traynor, Curt Myers, Blake Adams and Rob Grabon, all winning in front of a jam packed huge holiday throng of race fans on a sweltering July night in northern Wisconsin.

After the Missing Man formation was held to start the race in honor of Runkle, a young Midwest Modified driver that lost his life in 2016, twenty four drivers would take the green flag for the twenty three lap main event, Runkle's car number.

Cody Borgeson grabbed the lead by inches over VandeKamp on the opening lap but Vandekamp would overcome him by lap two and take over the top spot. A great battle for second saw Borgeson and Shadow Kitchner race back and forth for that spot as they traded the positions several times.

Travis Anderson and Blake Adams also moved in among the leaders with the first five drivers breaking away slightly from the pack.

The race was stopped three times in the first six laps for spins before the drivers settled in and long term green flag racing continued. VandeKamp continued to hold the top spot by several car lengths while the intense battle for second continued with Kitchner and Borgeson swapping the spot while also working all lanes of the track. By the halfway point of the race, Adams had moved up to fourth and Nick Koehler, the track's biggest winner to date in 2025, had also cracked the top five.

A stalled car slowed the action once again and set up a seven lap fight to the finish. Once again, VandeKamp continued to maintain the lead but it was Kitchner that picked up the pace as he edged away from Borgeson and started to close on the leader.

The race came down to the last two laps with Kitchner pulling to the rear bumper of VandeKamp as they raced for the final time down the back chute. A final push by Kitchner came up a car length short as VandeKamp held on for the win. Borgeson, Adams and Koehler completed the top five.

VandeKamp has been a consistent winner at area tracks for two decades but his appearances at Rice Lake have been slim and Thursday night's win was his first ever in the Midwest Modifieds at Rice Lake. On top of the cash, VandeKamp and the other top finishers took home unique trophies specially made for the K-Runk Memorial Race with members of his family on hand to make the presentation.

A historic feature win was achieved by Myers, who with his third feature win at the track in 2025 tied the great Don Drew for all time feature wins in the Super Stock class at Rice Lake, earning his fifty seventh triumph over his long career. And this win was special since he had to fight off serious challenges by his son Alex to hold on for the win.

Tommy Richards started on the pole but Myers wasted little time after the drop of the green, somehow finding racing room as he advanced from the fifth starting spot to nip Richards for the lead by the completion of the first lap. After that, it was a matter of maintaining his groove and then holding off a couple of stiff challenges to his lead.

Alex Myers and Richards went at it for the second spot with them trading that position several times in the early going. This race was a marathon, with the yellow flag seemingly waving constantly and some of the drivers struggled to keep their cars pointed in the correct direction. By the halfway point of the race, the yellow had waved eight times already and track officials made the decision to shorten up the event due to time constraints and some rapidly approaching thunder storms.

With two laps to go, Alex Myers got a great restart on his father and went for broke in turn three, throwing a big slider on his father in an effort to slip past him. However, Curt had him covered and when Alex couldn't complete his attempt, he lost control of his car and spun, thus ending his attempt to steal a win.

The final restart turned into a one lap dash to the finish and Myers was up to the task, beating Richards to the line to take the win. Andrew Davis and Chad Johnson both drove consistent races to finish in third and fourth and Leslie Leu was a late charger up to fifth.

Myers now stands on the thresh hold of destiny as his next feature win will make him the all time feature win leader in the Super Stock class at his home track.

Nick Traynor is having a spectacular year to date in the Street Stock class at Rice Lake as he has been beaten only once so far and he continued to be white hot as he came from the ninth starting spot to top the feature race. In the early going it was Cole Richards holding the point with Trey Hess and Caiden Engel following closely. However, Traynor was on the move early as he was up to fifth when the first caution flew with five laps completed.

By the time the race was slowed again for a yellow, Traynor was up to third as he continued to show great speed, driving past other drivers both on the inside of the track and also equally adept at passing them on the top side.

At the halfway point of the race, Traynor drove past Richards to take over the lead and from that point, the big field was just chasing him. Richards and Hess, making his first start of the year at the track, ended up second and third. Andrew Hanson, debuting a new ride after a violent flip recently at another track, finished fourth with Danny Richards completing the top five.

Traynor's win was his fifth already this year at the track as he leads all drivers in feature wins earned so far in 2025.

A late race pass allowed Blake Adams to overcome Simon Wahlstrom and win the Modified feature race. Wahlstrom had started on the pole and led the first thirteen laps of the race, much of that time with Adams all over him for the lead. The two engaged in some entertaining racing as they crossed each other over several times in their battle for the lead with each time Wahlstrom continuing to hold the top spot.

That is, until lap fourteen when Adams was finally able to edge out in front and then when Wahlstrom got hung up in traffic, the issue was decided. For Adams, his rookie season in the Modifieds continues to produce great results with his fourth feature win at the track so far this year. Wahlstrom finished up a strong second with Joe Chaplin Jr, Kyle Kirberger and Matt Leer, who came from the rear after an early spin, completing the top five.

The Pure Stocks wrapped up the evening with a very entertaining main event that saw Rob Grabon win his second feature race of the season. Caleb Duffie took the lead from the outside pole and early in the event, fought off challenges from Grabon and Eric Crosby to hold the top spot. Duffie held the lead for the first five laps before Crosby was able to pass him on the outside to take over the top spot but then, following a yellow flag for a spin, both Duffie and Grabon fought back.

The leaders then raced three wide around the track before Grabon got a good run on the inside and took over the top spot. Crosby then slipped into second and put the heat on the leader as they began to pull away from the pack.

They would battle it out right to the finish with Grabon holding on for the win. A wild scramble saw five or more cars all battling for third on the final corner and the mad scramble saw Duffie as well as others dislodged from their positions.

The checkered flag was thrown but the running order was adjusted to reflect the final corner incident. Duffie was officially scored in third with C.J. Wagner fourth and Devin Fries completed the top five.

There will be no racing at the track on this coming Saturday night, July 5th as everyone takes the rest of the holiday weekend off.

However, when everyone returns on Saturday night, July 12th, it will be to another special event. For the first time in track history, the Dirt Race Central Street Stock Tour will visit the speedway. The DRC Tour, which includes a number of tracks all over WISSOTA, will feature many of the best Street Stock drivers in WISSOTA and for many, they will use this race as a tune up for the Little Dream Race scheduled for July 29th. The Street Stocks will be racing for a grand to the winner on this night. The other four classes that race at the track will also be on hand for a full point paying program. The track will also celebrate the upcoming Barron County Fair on this night.

Race time is slated for 6 pm with the latest information on this race and other coming events available through the speedway website at www.ricelakespeedway.net and the track face book page.
