Nelson and Adams Sweep Dairyland Dash Weekend at Rice Lake Speedway

Rice Lake WI, August 31 – Cade Nelson and Blake Adams accomplished weekend sweeps of racing action as the Rice Lake Speedway completed the 2025 racing season with the second half of the second annual Dairyland Dash event. For the second straight night, Nelson was a winner in the USRA Late Model feature while Adams won for the second straight night also, making a stirring drive to take the checkers in the Midwest Modified main event. Other winners on Sunday night included Kaden Blaeser in the Modifieds, Dexton Koch in the Super Stocks, Hunter VanGilder in the Street Stocks and Mark Barta in the Pure Stocks.

Sunday night' racing action marked the completion of the second year of racing for the new ownership team of Rice Lake Speedway LLC, a season plagued by rainouts but graced by beautiful weather this weekend.

For the second straight night, Nelson started on the pole for the Late Model feature after he had a successful heat race run that earned him that spot. He then took the lead over a twenty five car field to run up front during the opening laps. This race had a difficult time staying under the green, as four early yellows in the first four laps for spins kept any pace from developing.

However, after that, it was green to checkers for Nelson and the drivers chasing him. Cooper Sundby moved into second early and followed the leader with Clayton Hofteig, who spun early but was restored to his spot when he had help going around, moved into the third spot.

Nelson had built up a six car length lead by the halfway point of the race but then ran into trouble getting through some of the slower traffic and his lead was dwindled down to just a car length.

Sundby was right on his tail when Nelson opted to go to the high side of the track down the front chute to pass a couple of slower cars but he got too high in turn one and Sundby drove under him.

However, Nelson stormed back down the back chute and as the leaders still had much traffic in front of them, Nelson made a bold move off turn four, squeezing past the slower cars up against the concrete wall with just inches to spare. This move gave him a clear advantage again over Sundby and while Cooper cut the lead slightly in the remaining few laps, Nelson drove home for his second straight win, earning twelve hundred dollars for his outing.

Sundby finished a strong second with Hofteig completing the top three. Ryan Howe and Lucas Peterson finished next in line with twenty two cars still on the track at the finish. It was the youthful victory lane ceremony as all three of the top finishers are still in their teens. Nelson's win was his third of the 2025 season at Rice Lake.

Another teenager earned a weekend sweep when Blake Adams came from the fourth row to top the Midwest Modified main event for the second straight night. This race ran green from start to finish so Adams really had to move quickly to get to the front. There was lots of early passing in this race as Brady Larson led the opening lap, only to be passed two laps later by Joey Jensen for the lead.

Larson and Jensen then swapped the lead back and forth until just a few laps later when Adams, who was moving up rapidly, joined them to make it a three car battle for the lead.

High speed jockeying for position among the top three made this a thrilling race and on lap seven, Larson dove low in turn one to block Jensen with Adams then moving to the cushion where he got a great run and was able to pass both his rivals down the back chute and claim the lead.

Adams was then able to pull away from his challengers as he set a blistering pace while Larson and Jensen continued their battle for second.

Adams' biggest challenge the rest of the race was to weave his way through the traffic but he did so successfully and drove home for a convincing win, recording his third Midwest Modified feature win of the year at the track. Larson was able to fend off Jensen the rest of the race to claim second as Cody Cimfl and James Vendela, both with strong runs of their own, completed the top five. Only two drivers failed to finish this race also.

Score another win for a teenager racer in the Modified class as Kaden Blaeser led from start to finish to claim the win and the two thousand dollars that went to the winner. Blaeser got the jump on Shane Halopka at the start, moved to the cushion and then drove a flawless race as he was never seriously challenged for the win.

He built up an early lead and after the race was yellow flagged on its first starting attempt, it then went green to checkers with Blaeser' biggest challenge being the slower cars he had to weave through.

Behind him though, there was plenty of passing and Jim Falls driver Mike Anderson was putting together his best drive of the year at the track. Going against popular opinion that the top side was fastest, Anderson hugged the inside line and made it work as after starting seventh, he was gradually able to pass driver after driver using that line, until he was up to second by the halfway point of the race.

However, Blaeser was just too strong to be caught for the lead as he maintained a fast pace and Anderson remained a corner behind him the rest of the race as Kaden took his first win of the year at the track.

Two other drivers also successfully used the low line on the track to move up substantially though, as Brady Uotinen moved all the way from eleventh to finish a strong third with Darrell Nelson coming for the fourth row to finish fourth, one spot ahead of Matt Leer.

It was a frustrating weekend for Jensen. As the national point leader in the Midwest Modified division, he was looking for feature wins at Rice Lake but while he got solid finishes, he was able to record no wins.

His frustration mounted when his second entry in the Super Stock class failed him on Sunday with victory lane in sight. He started on the pole for that race and took an immediate lead with Dexton Koch right behind him. Koch, who was not on hand on Saturday, moved to the rear bumper of Jensen and they put on a pleasing battle as they fought for the top spot. Dan Nissalke, who started in the third row, moved to the third position by the halfway point of the race with Ryan and Eric Olson next in line.

The battle for the lead continued, with Koch looking to the inside of Jensen lap after lap but just not quite able to make the pass. The yellow flew with just five laps to go when Warren Bartelt hit the concrete wall on the front chute and this seemed to be setting up as a short sprint to the finish with the lead in doubt.

Suddenly, however, leader Jensen dove into the infield under yellow and then headed to the pits, as his car apparently suffered some serious mechanical issues that wouldn't allow him to continue racing.

Koch inherited the lead at this point but he was't home free quite yet, as Nissalke threw a couple challenges at him in the remaining laps, but Koch held on to claim the win over Nissalke with Alex Myers nipping Patrick Beeksma for third with Eric Olson completing the top five. It was Koch's first win of the year at the track.

Hunter VanGilder shook off the issues from Saturday night racing to top the Street Stock feature race on Sunday. He edged out Nick Traynor in the closest feature finish of the night.

VanGilder started on the pole and would be scored the leader of all twenty laps but it was tight as he was challenged by both Traynor and Saturday night winner Parker Anderson from start to finish. While Traynor and Anderson were also battling between each other of second, they both were within close striking distance of VanGilder who never had the opportunity to relax during this race.

A late yellow set up a five lap sprint to the checkers and Traynor worked to the high side of VanGilder in the late going, gradually nosing up beside the leader. On the final lap Traynor was able to get beside VanGilder down the back chute and they raced into the final corner side by side but VanGilder got just a little bit better run off the final corner and nipped Traynor by .076 seconds or about a half car length.

Anderson finished a close third with Travis Loew and Cody Kummer rounding out the top five.

The Pure Stock feature completed the evening's entertainment and this was perhaps the most competitive race of the entire weekend. Eric Crosby took the early lead but was only able to hold the top spot for one lap before Mark Barta took over when Crosby slipped up the track. A lone spin bunched the field with four laps completed as Barta continued to lead over Crosby and Tyler Wahlstrom .
However, once the race resumed, Wahlstrom showed speed and in two laps he had passed both the drivers in front of him to take over the top spot. At the midpoint of the race, Wahlstrom continued to hold the lead over Barta and Crosby. That's when it really got good as for the next seven laps, Wahlstrom and Barta ran side by side around the track, inches away from each other as they battled for the win but not even touching the other driver's car.

Barta took the lead back on lap ten and he also led lap twelve but inbetween, Wahlstrom led laps eleven and then reclaimed the lead the final time on lap thirteen. He then put a car length on Barta and continued to hold that margin as he raced across the finish line.

However, the race was not yet official and Wahlstrom failed the post race technical inspection as his car had an illegal wheel on the front of the car. Thus, he was disqualified and the win went to Barta, his second of the year in this his rookie season.

Officially, Crosby was then awarded second with Steve Karshbaum, Austin Fencl and Dylan Helget next in line.

Sunday night's racing marked the official end to the 2025 racing season at the Rice Lake Speedway. Owners of the speedway Dick Kalow, Kolby and Dean Kiehl and the employees of the track would like to thank all the fans, drivers and sponsors of the speedway for a great second year, despite the issues with the weather that cost them six nights of racing. Bigger and better things yet are in the plans for 2026 and beyond and everyone should monitor the speedway website and face book page for announcements concerning off season activities such as the racing banquet and next year's schedule, among other things.
