Richards Edges Out Myers in Rice Lake Fastlane Opener
Rice Lake WI, June 5 – Tommy Richards, a leader earlier in the feature event, made a late race surge and passed Curt Myers with only three laps left to go and then drove on to victory in the Fastlane Motorsports Northland Super Stock Series 2025 opener on Thursday night at the Rice Lake Speedway. In the Midwest Modified main event, run as a part of the evening's racing action, Shadow Kitchner took the lead early and then held off late race challenges from both Ashley Boyum and Nick Koehler to take the win.
With drivers on hand from as far away as Manitoba, thirty five Super Stock drivers signed in to race on Thursday, with twenty six of them qualifying for the thirty lap Super Stock feature. Fans would see an ultra competitive Super Stock feature with five different leaders during the course of the thirty lap main.
Jesse Redetzke took off strong and grabbed the early lead from the pole with Leslie Leu, Austin Niemeyer and Austin Blom all very close behind him.
Coming down the front chute with the pack in tight and high speed formation, a car got into the front stretch wall, bounced back into traffic and before the field could get slowed, several violent collisions took place right under the flagstand of starter Tom Clausen.
Perhaps the worst hits were taken by track point leader Eric Olson, who was slammed hard at least two times and ended up pitched sideways on the track with the car of Chris Wark sitting on its side and planted across the hood of Olson's car. Eric was shook but refused attention as it took the wrecker crews several minutes to lift Wark's car up and off Olson's machine so that both could be removed from the track.
Dylan Nelson and Trenton Bond were also a part of the crash and all four cars were eliminated from the race with heavy damage.
The race was restarted with Redekzke the leader and Leu and Niemeyer challenging him. Just two laps later, driving down the back chute, Redetzke suddenly slowed and dove into the infield, forfeiting his lead as his car had apparently suffered some devastating mechanical issues. Leu took advantage by moving into the lead as the race continued under the green.
Leu could not escape the pursuit of several other drivers and suddenly the leaders were racing three wide around the track. Niemeyer would edge ahead by inches to lead lap seven but then they went right back to a three wide formation and by the next lap, Richards, who had started tenth, edged into the top spot.
The yellow flew again when Alex Myers hit the back stretch wall hard and his car had to be removed from the track on a wrecker. Back under green, Richards retained the lead over Niemeyer when suddenly, Curt Myers, who had started way back in fifteenth position, moved into third.
Continuing his tear, Myers passed Niemeyer for second and then took off after Richards.
On lap eleven, Myers became the fourth different leader of the race when he got under Tommy and took over the lead. Other drivers were also on the move. By the halfway point of the event, Terran Spacek, who had started fourteenth, was up to third and challenging Richards for the runner up spot.
Myers continued to hold the lead though, as he was able to maintain about a six car length lead over Richards, who continued to have Spacek nipping at his heels.
With the last twenty one laps of the race continuing under the green, the drivers settled in and it looked like the top three would be assured. However, with the end of the race approaching, Myers started to catch the back of the pack where about six or more cars were all battling for position. He continued to maintain his advantage but he had to decide whether to ride behind the back of the pack cars and hope that Richards didn't catch him in the remaining few laps or pull out to the top side of the track and try to pass those slower running cars.
Myers opted for the second choice and on this occasion, it came back to bit him hard. When he moved up the track to try and get by the slower cars, he found the top side of the track to be quite slippery and his car pushed up toward the wall, causing him to lose all by two car lengths of his advantage over Richards as the leaders raced down the back stretch.
Undaunted, Myers elected to try again to get by the slower cars up high in turn three and the same thing happened once again, but even worse. As Myers attempted to get back down the track toward the low groove, Richards drove past him and into the lead with just two laps to go. Myers lost so much ground he was unable to mount a charge to get the lead back and Richards then continued on, holding a several car length lead over Myers as the leaders took the checkered flag.
It was a stunning late race development and many in the crowd were shocked at the developments that took place. Richards was a pleased winner as his victory earned him a thousand dollars plus other contingencies. Myers had to settle for second with Spacek driving home third. Two other drivers made notable chargers through the pack as defending Super Stock National Champion and defending winner of this race Dexton Koch drove up from seventeenth to finish fourth.
The Hard Charger of the event, who received two hundred dollars for his efforts as the Hard Charger award was in honor of all time Super Stock feature win leader at the Rice Lake Speedway, Don Drew, who was in attendance, Shane Sabraski started twenty first and race up to fifth. Seventeen of the original starters were still on the track at the finish.
For Richards, it was his third ever feature win at the Rice Lake Speedway and a great way to break in a new car as Thursday nigjht's race was his first of the year debuting his new car.
Shadow Kitchner made a great move on the opening lap of the Midwest Modified feature race and that move would guarantee him a lock on the lead for the entire twenty laps. He was able to sneak under Michael Truscott on the fourth turn, coming from the second row to take over the lead. While Kitchner held the top spot, there was an intense battle right behind him as Les Duellman, Ashley Boyum and Brady Larson all raced very hard for position.
When the first yellow flew with nine laps complete, Boyum had edged into the runner up slot with Duellman right behind. Nick Koehler, a four time winner at the track already this season, had moved up to fourth by this time and when the green reappeared, both he and Larson battled hard with Duellman before both edged past him.
After another brief yellow for a spinner, the last nine laps of the race would go green to checkers and the leaders tore around the track in a high speed formation. All were pushing very hard but the top three maintained their distance over the pack. Kitchner had his car wired to the fast lane and there would be no catching him on this night.
He drove under the double checkers with several lengths over Boyum, who drove and excellent race to finish in the runner up slot. Koehler pushed his hardest, but he had to settle for third with Larson next in line. Tyler Vernon came from thirteenth to complete the top five. Kitchner earned eight hundred dollars for his midweek victory.
There will no racing at the speedway on Saturday night, June 7th. The next scheduled event at the speedway will be on Saturday night, June 14th. It will be the Relay at the Races night for the American Cancer Society and all five classes will be in action for a full program. Race time will be at 6 pm and updates will be available on the speedway website as well as on the speedway face book page.
