Richards And Cimfl Crack Victory Lane, Koehler Continues To Win at Rice Lake Speedway

Rice Lake WI – May 31 – The special events at the Rice Lake Speedway saw Cam Schafer from Little Canada Minnesota top the Traditional Sprint feature race and Garrett Tatnell win the Winged Sprint main event. Four of the weekly WISSOTA sanctioned classes were also in action on Saturday and winners included Nick Koehler, Alex Myers, Cody Cimfl and George Richards.

Koehler's win made him the biggest feature winner of the season so far at the speedway as Nick won for the fourth time in five tries, so far dominating a division that typically sees multiple winners and no one standing tall above the others racing in the class.

Koehler has shown both speed and some good fortune when it comes to picking feature lineup spots during the redraw after the heats have been completed. Saturday night he started on the outside pole next to Jake Stai. Things almost went sideways in the first corner though, as Stai spun while desperately trying to grab the initial lead. Somehow, the rest of the pack managed to avoid a big opening lap collision but Stai went to the back for the restart and that put Mike Schnider along side Koehler on the front row. No matter. Koehler got the jump on Schnider to take the early lead with Schnider, Brady Larson and Travis Anderson chasing him.

Two more yellow flags for spinning cars slowed the action twice in the first half of the race but Koehler continued to lead with Larson moving up to second by the halfway point. Koehler continued to hold down the top spot with Larson running the cushion and closing to within a couple car lengths of the leader. Meanwhile, Blake Adams, who started seventh, was easing his way toward the front also, getting by Anderson and then Schnider when Cade Johnson stalled in turn three and set up a three lap sprint to the finish.

Koehler was up to the task, stepping away from the competition and driving home unchallenged for his fourth win of the season here already. Adams put much pressure on for second but Larson would retain that spot. Cole Kelley made a late run up to fourth ahead of Anderson.

Suddenly, Alex Myers is the driver to beat in the Super Stock class. He started on the pole and led all twenty laps to claim his second Super Stock feature win of the year. In doing so, he became the first repeat winner in the class while also winning for the second straight Saturday night.

Cory Davis made his first start of 2025 on Saturday and he stuck with Myers for the first couple of laps before Leslie Leu took over the spot from him. Soon after, the Olson family came calling with both Ryan and Eric challenging Leu for the second spot.

Myers was running smoothly up front and began to pull away from the field while the battle for second heated up. Ryan was working very well right on the bottom side of the track and he burst into second with his father soon following him past Leu for third.

With only a single yellow to slow the action just before the halfway point, Alex continued to hold the lead which he had moved out to a comfortable distance. The Olson's were having quite the battle for second however, with Eric cutting his son no slack as they battled for the runner up honors.

Alex continued on, never having to endure any real challenges as he drove on for the win. In lapped traffic at the end, Ryan made the best move which would allow him to hold off Eric and claim the runner up honors. Leu would settle for fourth and Austin Harris had by far his best night of the year as he completed the top five.

Connor Franson came oh so close to winning his first Street Stock feature race ever at Rice Lake. However, a late race restart proved to be his downfall when Cody Cimfl was able to get a great jump on a lap twelve restart and squeeze past Franson to take over the lead and ultimately, the win.

Franson had started on the pole and did a great job fighting off early race challenges from Cimfl and Danny Richards, who nearly got by the whole pack by riding the cushion. However, Franson maintained his line through the halfway point of the race, holding those two behind him as he drove a smooth line around the track.

However, the late race restart following a spin on the front chute proved to be his downfall. He spun his tires when the green was displayed, Cimfl timed his move perfectly and he was able to slip inside Franson and take over the lead without making any contact between the two front runners. For the last three laps, Cimfl then pulled away despite Franson's efforts to catch back up.

As Cimfl extended his lead, Franson pushed up the track on the final lap which allowed Hunter VanGilder, who had worked his way up from the third row, to slip under him and claim second. Franson reluctently settled for third, ahead of Cody Kummer and Richards.

For Cimfl, it was his first feature win of the season and only his second ever in a Street Stock. Interestingly, for the first time this season, he was driving his car owner Kevin Herrman's car as Cimfl was in a grinding wreck here last week and that car has as yet not be repaired so Herrman turned over his own car to Cimfl.

George Richards is number two in all time feature wins at Rice Lake in the Pure Stock class. However, he has not won a feature event here in over a year. He took care of that statistic on Saturday, leading fro start to finish in a nonstop main event to record his first win of the season.

He had Bob Wahlstrom and Rob Grabon on his heels for the entire race, as they were bumper to bumper right behind him and any mistake would have cost him the win. However, the top three circled the track for fifteen laps in that fashion, but Richards refused to make a slip up and the two following were just not fast enough to pull out and drive by him.

At the line, it was Richards with Wahlstrom glued to his rear bumper and Grabon inches behind for third. C.J. Wagner brought his station wagon home fourth with rookie driver Mark Barta completing the top five. For Richards, it was his twenty eighth feature win in the Pure Stocks at Rice Lake, trailing only Jason Havel for the all time lead.

The speedway will have a quick turnaround this week, with a very special event being hosted at the track on Thursday night, June 5th. The Fastlane Motorsports Super Stock Series will make its 2025 debut at the track on that night. This traveling series, which consists of ten races this year, will pit the top Super Stock drivers from several states and Canada against each other in what is sure to be a memorable night of racing. Perhaps as many as forty drivers from several states are expected to battle it out on Thursday, and since this is the first race in the series, any driver wanting to be a part of the large point fund this series offers will be racing in Rice Lake. A thousand dollars will be on the line to the race winner with a generous payoff behind the winner for this series which is one that the Super Stock drivers mark on their calendar at the start of the year.

The Midwest Modifieds will also compete in a full racing program on Thursday with details of their purse expected to be announced very soon. Both shows will offer national points but not track points. The two class program will be designed to be a quick one for the drivers and fans on a week night.

Start times will see the pit gates opening at 4 pm with the spectator gates at 5 pm and the first green flag will fly at 7 pm.

The speedway will then be off until Saturday night, June 14th when a regular five division program will return and the Relay at the Races will be celebrated. Follow the speedway website and face book page for the latest news and information.
