Adams Doubles, Nelson Late Model Winner at RLS
Rice Lake WI, June 28 – After a twenty three night break triggered by repeated rainouts, the Rice Lake Speedway was finally back in action on Saturday night, June 28th. The second appearance in 2025 of the USRA Late Models found Cade Nelson winning his first ever feature race at Rice Lake while Cameron's Blake Adams found victory lane twice, winning in both the Modified and Midwest Modified feature races. Other winners on a steamy night when track officials raced hard to beat another incoming round of thunderstorms were Curt Myers, Nick Traynor and C.J. “Station” Wagner.
The Built 2 Media Co. brooms were also in display with Adams, Traynor and Wagner all sweeping in their divisions.
Adams became the first multi division winner of the 2025 season with his victories in both of the open wheel classes. The win in the Modifieds was a green to checkers victory with Adams leading all twenty laps. He started on the pole and grabbed the initial lead from Pat Hoffman, who was then passed by Darrell Nelson for second.
Just four laps into the contest, Kyle Helling had the dubious honor of being the first roll over victirm of the regular season when he hit the wall in turn three and did one revolution in the air before returning to earth. Kyle was not injured but the car left the track on a hook.
Adams then was dogged by Nelson who tried to make an inside pass on the leader, but the race was slowed twice more after Jason Gross finished off a bad night by losing a driveshaft and then Aiden Hoffman hammered the front stretch wall to trigger another yellow.
Meanwhile, Mike Anderson was moving into position after starting seventh and he drove past Nelson to take over the second spot. The last twelve laps of the race ran off nonstop and Anderson continued to try different lines, but Adams was running the cushion well and refused to waver, crossing the line with a comfortable margin of victory over Anderson. Nelson hung on for third over a closing Joe Chaplin Jr and Simon Wahlstrom.
For Adams, it was his third Modified win of the year at Rice Lake for the current point leader in the division.
The victory in the Midwest Modified feature took much longer to secure as he had to race and pass a strong running Travis Anderson before he could finally move to the front and that took much of the race to accomplish.
Strong contender Joey Jensen was eliminated in a first corner, multi car tangle before a single lap could be completed. Anderson had taken the early lead and he continued to hold that spot, even as Adams charged up from sixth and pulled to his inside. The two raced side by side around the track for a number of laps, with three yellows in the first half of the contest slowing the action.
On lap seven, Adams got by on the inside but that pass was negated by the yellow flag but just one lap later he made the move stick, driving into the lead for good. Once in front, he pulled away from the pack but there was a good battle behind him as Anderson fought to hold on to the second spot. In the late going, he would be passed by Cole Boston for that spot, with Anderson holding on to third at the finish. Cody Cimfl edged out Brady Larson for fourth in what was a bitter race for position.
It was Adams' first Midwest Modified feature win of the season at Rice Lake and with point leader Nick Koehler absent due to racing in Wyoming this weekend, Adams took over the point lead in the Midwest Modified division also.
The Late Model feature saw three different leaders with eventual winner Nelson not taking over the top spot until lap eleven of the fifteen lap finale for the Late Models. Patrick Kletschka took the initial lead but the other front row starter, Zack Friske stayed close with him and on lap five, he surprised Kletschka by driving past him to take over the lead.
Nelson, meanwhile, had started sixth but was gradually working his way to the front, along with current USRA national point leader Lucas Peterson. Friske continued to fight off challenges from first Kletschka and then Peterson while Nelson also closed.
The race was stopped at the halfway point when Steve O'Brien hit the turn three wall very hard and triggered the yellow. On the green, Nelson, who had worked his way up to third, made a move under both Peterson and Friske to take over the lead and then one lap later, Peterson rolled to a half with mechanical problems, ending his night.
Nelson then pulled away from the pack over the last four laps as Friske started to fade back into the pack. A last lap surge saw Cooper Sundby drive hard to the inside of Kletschka down the back chute and take over the second spot with Kletschka, Ryan Howe and Jason McFadden completing the top five.
Curt Myers edged one step closer to the Super Stock feature total of all time leader Don Drew with a wire to wire win. Myers started on the inside of row two but on the drop of the green shot to the cushion and nipped Leslie Leu down the front chute to claim the lap one lead. After that, the rest of the field was just chasing the Myers car as he continued to hold a strong lead over the pack. Leu maintained second for the first half of the race with an early yellow for Alex Myers, as his challenge for a top five position was ended by mechanical issues.
Leu continued to hold down second but he was challenged by both Andrew Davis and Ryan Olson, both of whom were moving forward from third and fourth row starting spots. But the halfway point, Davis was up to third with Olson right behind him.
The race had a long green flag period with Olson eventually moving into second. However, a big charge was executed by Joey Jensen in the last half of the race. Not shown in the top five at the race's midpoint, he drove all the way up to third when the yellow flew with just two laps to go. Another yellow delayed the finish but finally, the last two laps were completed. Jensen moved into second and Myers changed lines just to protect his lead but he drove home the winner over Jensen, Olson, Davis and Adam Pratt. It was Myers' second feature win of the year at Rice Lake.
Nick Traynor moved into a tie with Koehler as the track's top feature winner so far this season as he won his fourth feature win in the Street Stocks. Traynor showed great speed as he started ninth on the grid but had moved up to second by the halfway point of the race.
Hunter VanGilder had taken the early lead from the pole and had opened up quite a margin over the field himself, until the yellow flew after seven laps which cost him that big lead. He then had Sam Fankhauser right on his tail until Traynor moved past Sam at the halfway point for second while a group of six drivers battled back and forth behind them.
Some jockeying for the lead saw Traynor get to the inside of VanGilder down the front chute and Traynor took over the top spot. VanGilder tried hard down the back chute to reclaim the lead but he got into the back of the leader, turning Traynor around and triggering the yellow flag. VanGilder called it a night at this point and Traynor was restored to the point with no damage to his car.
From this point, Traynor then pulled away from the pack and he would not be challenged the last three laps as he took the win. The battle for second and back however, was wild with Danny Richards making a late surge to take over the runner up honors and Tommy Pogones moving into third. Levi Randt made his own charge too, as he came from tenth to fourth, just ahead of Fankhauser at the finish.
There were three different leaders in the Pure Stock feature and bad luck that struck one of them while running in the front spot that all factored in the race's outcome. Bob Wahlstrom led the opening lap of the race before he was passed by Rob Grabon. Grabon was setting a fast pace and he quickly opened up some distance over the rest of the field.
Grabon was passing slower traffic quickly but on lap six, he inadvertently made contact with one of the slower cars, giving his own car a flat tire, after which he slowed, the yellow waved and he went to the pits to replace the flat. He returned to the track but was forced to restart in the back.
This gave the lead back to Wahlstrom but he couldn't hold off the charge of C.J. Wagner, who had his station wagon flying as on the green, he drove past both Austin Fencl and Wahlstrom to take over the lead.
The rest of the race was run off green to checkers and Wagner continued to hold the top spot as Wahlstrom and Fencl battled for second.
Wagner maintained a three car length lead over Wahlstrom, who eventually claimed second and C.J continued to hold that lead to the finish with Fencl finishing a close third. Grabon managed to race back up to fourth with Steve Karshbaum completing the top five.
For Wagner, it was his first Pure Stock feature win since way back in 2015 and his first win on any kind at the track since a Midwest Modified feature win back in 2022.
Next up at the speedway is one of the biggest nights of the 2025 racing season. On Thursday night, July 3rd, the annual Firecracker special takes place at the track. Not only will there be a full program of racing in all five divisons that race regularly at the track, but one of the best fireworks displays in the area will be shot off at dusk. It will also be the annual Relay for Life race for the Barron County Cancer Society and to top things off, the Midwest Modifieds will be racing in a very special event as the K-Runk Memorial Race returns to the speedway with the winner of the main event earning $2323 in honor of Kyle Runkle.
