Adams Doubles In Rice Lake Speedway Racing Action

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (June 25) – It was Kid’s Night Saturday at the Speedway, and with the left over feature races from last week’s rain shortened event, a total of nine feature races were contested Saturday. Only Kevin Adams was a double winner; he swept all three races he was entered in Saturday while there were seven other feature winners including two first time winners, one of which won his first feature race ever in the class.

Adams dominated the Modified action all night, leading the majority of both feature races, each of which ran nonstop for twenty green flag laps.

In the makeup feature race Adams started sixth and quickly slid past Tony Bahr to move into the runner up slot where he battled a strong running Steve Hallquist for the lead. He followed Steve for a few laps until he found an opening and then ducked under Hallquist to take the lead. Once in front he gradually pulled away from the pack as Hallquist had to deal with the slowly advancing Bahr. Adams was nearly a straightaway in front at the checkered while Bahr passed for second and Hallquist held off a charging Shaun Kreyer for third with Tim McMann completing the top five.

The regular feature race saw Adams start one row farther back in the pack as Jason Swan and Kreyer battled in the early going for the lead before Kreyer took the top spot. Adams quickly moved through the pack with some bold moves as he blew by Paul Brust and Mike Anderson on the high side to take over second and close on Kreyer. Kevin dove low in turn one and slid up under Kreyer to take over the top spot while strong running Dave Cain worked his way through traffic and took over the second spot.

The race was then on between two of the strongest runners in the entire area and on this night Adams was the one that prevailed. Despite Cain’s best efforts, the lead that Adams had built up early could not be cut into as the top two seemed evenly matched. Adams rode the cushion home with about half a straightaway over the Minnesota driver while Kreyer completed another strong run as he held off Brust’s last charge with Anderson completing the top five.

Among the first time winners, Street Stock driver Josh Amans won his first ever in the class after having been a previous feature winner from several years ago in the Pure Stock class. The second year Street Stock driver took advantage of a bad break by one of his competitors that gave him the lead, and then he held off a charge for the win. For the longest time it looked like second year Street driver Joel Hinrichs was going to get his first ever win in the class as he took the early lead and kept Amans and others at bay for most of the race. However, when Andy Cimfl blew a radiator hose going into turn three right in front of the leaders, Hinrichs got in the liquid and slid up the track, opening the door for Amans. Josh then survived a late caution to hold off Nick Wojcik for the win with Adam Soltis, Sam Fankhauser and Doug Wojcik completing the top five.

The regular Street Stock feature saw Doug Wojcik put on a show as he moved to the high side of the track and then drove up from his third row starting spot to claim his fourth feature win of the year at Rice Lake. Simon Wahlstrom took the early lead in the race as he battled off Fankhauser and Cody Kummer until Wojcik came charging up to challenge him. Doug got inside Simon and they had an excellent side by side battle for a couple laps before Wojcik edged into the lead. A late caution bunched the field but Doug pulled away again to score the win over Wahlstrom. Jared Lindner crossed the line third but failed technical inspection so that moved Soltis into third ahead of Nick Wojcik and Fankhauser in the official finish.

The other first time winner was Ben Hillman who has been close many times already this season but for the first time Saturday was able to seal the deal. Andy Grymala moved up from the second row to take the early lead in the event with Aaron Wilson moving in to challenge him. Wilson was running strong and he took over the top spot as Hillman moved up from the fourth row. Hillman closed in as he and Wilson raced side by side for the lead for an extended period of time before Ben was able to edge into the lead.

After running smoothly most of the distance, the Super Stocks had yellow flag fever in the late going with three slowdowns near the end. Each time Hillman would power away from the field as he drove on for the win over Wilson, Grymala, Eric Olson and Jason Forehand.

Olson controlled the makeup feature to get his second win of the year at Rice Lake. Again it was Grymala who led in the early going with Olson battling with Wilson for the second spot. A mid race yellow for debris bunched the field and on the green Olson went to the outside and was able to edge past Grymala to take over the lead. Once in front, Eric pulled away for the win with Grymala holding off Forehand for second. Hillman and Wilson completed the top five.

Repeat winners dominated the Midwest Modifieds with Matt Leer winning his third of the year here and Cory Crapser his second. Leer took the make up main event after a spirited battle that saw Dusty Brown lead a number of laps in quest of his first win in the class, Brown fought off the repeated challenges of Ryan Viltz and Mike Truscott until Leer was finally able to blast past into the lead. Once in front, he pulled away from Viltz to take the win with Truscott, Crapser and Brown in the top five.

The regular feature saw a great battle between Zach Manley and Crapser before Crapser took the win. Manley led in the early going with Truscott and Viltz challenging before Crapser came charging up from the fourth row. Cory got to the inside of Zach and they raced side by side around the track for three laps before Crapser would edge ahead for the lead. With no yellow flags to slow the action, Crapser continued on for the win with Manley finishing second. Truscott, Ryan and Tito Viltz completed the top five.

The Pure Stocks ran a single feature, having completed their race in the rain last Saturday and it was Jason Havel taking his second win of the year after a spirited battle with Nick Traynor. The race got off to a rocky start with pole sitter Jamey Fisher spinning in turn four and collecting John Erickson which necessitated a yellow flag. Traynor then moved up from the third row to take the lead with Jay Folz and Dustin Doughty battling behind him. Havel started in the fourth row and slowly picked his way through the field until he moved into the second spot.

Traynor continued to lead and it looked like he might take his first win of the year but Havel picked up the pace while at the same time Traynor’s car started to smoke and the motor was making some mysterious sounds. Havel drove deep into the corners and was able to make the pass and then pull away for the victory. Traynor held on for second over Folz with Doughty and C.J. Wagner completing the top five.

This week will be one of the busiest for the track during the entire summer. Wednesday night the Speedway will host extreme bull riding and free style motocross big air jumps produced by Rock Wolf Hill Rodeo Productions at 6:30 p.m. The track will then be converted back over for auto racing for Saturday night’s Firecracker Special. As well as a full program of racing in all five classes, a spectacular fireworks display will also take place with both aerial and ground displays at no additional charge. It will also be the Cancer Relay at the Races night with many special promotions in conjunction with that event. Race time is 6:30 p.m.
