|Flaming Five Tops Rice Lake Speedway Short Show
By Ed Reichert
RICE LAKE, WI (June 18) - For the second straight Saturday night, the Flaming #5 Pure Stock carried its driver to a significant victory Saturday night at Rice Lake Speedway in a rain shortened program. Last week the red Ford Thunderbird gave driver Butch Madsen his first ever Pure Stock victory at Rice Lake in his long and illustrious career and Saturday car owner Jason Havel drove the car to his first ever feature win at Rice Lake. The rest of the racing program was postponed until next Saturday with four feature races to be made up.
Eighteen cars took the green flag for the Pure Stock feature with Chad Eastman outfighting Rob Lowe to take the early lead with Kolby Kiehl, Mike Schnider and Brandon Davis all battling right behind the leader.
Havel started seventh on the grid but also quickly moved up and he was soon involved in the fight for the second spot. Moving quickly, Havel continued to charge forward and swept past Eastman to take over the lead. One lap later, Eastman, all alone and pushing to catch back up to the leader spun in turn four, triggering the first yellow flag of the event.
Havel continued to lead on the green but was soon challenged by Dustin Doughty who had moved up from the tenth starting position. Doughty nosed past Havel for the lead but Jason then pushed harder down the back chute and retook the top spot. Doughty was still challenging hard for the lead when Jay Folz, the third place car spun in turn four and the yellow light came on again.
At this point the rain, which had started several minutes earlier and was very light, picked up in intensity and the track soon became too wet to even drive on. The cars were sent to the pit area, and after the rains continued for several more minutes, the decision was quickly made that the racing was done for Saturday. The Pure Stock feature, which was over half completed, was called a race . Havel was declared the winner with rookies Doughty and Schnider getting their best finishes ever at second and third. Second year driver Kiehl got his best finish at fourth with Davis completing the top five. The Street Stock, Super Stock, Midwest Modified and Modified main events will be completed next Saturday along with a another full program for all five divisions.
Next Saturday will also be Kid’s Night at the track. S & R Towing and Dirt Track Specialties will be the sponsor of the racing program. S & R will be giving away bikes to the kids and the Main Street Repair Racing Team from Cameron having been working tirelessly to make this a special night. At press time, over twenty bikes have been secured to be given away to the kids along with a lot of other items and the number is expected to grow over the coming week. Race time next Saturday night is 6:30 p.m.
