Wilson Wins Big Super Stock Feature at Rice Lake Speedway

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (August 7) - Aaron Wilson, who postponed back surgery in an effort to win the Super Stock point title at the Rice Lake Speedway, made a big step in that direction Saturday night when, with only two more point races scheduled this season, he won his first Super Stock main event of the year here over the biggest field of the year. Other winners on a stormy Saturday night through much of the area were Kevin Adams, Ryan Viltz, Ron Hanestad and Nick Wojcik.

Wilson’s win was his first of the year here and made him the eighth different driver to win a Super Stock feature race here, tops for the track. Wilson started sixth in the main event but quickly moved forward as last week’s feature winner Wayne Harris Jr and Wayne Dean battled in the early going. Shane Kisling also moved into a challenging spot as did Ben Hillman. An early yellow helped bunch the field as Harris Jr. had to withstand major pressure from Kisling who was working the high side of the track.

Wilson had moved into third when the second yellow flew at the highway point for another minor spin. Harris Jr. opted to move up to the cushion as he had done last week but this opened the door for Wilson who drove under Harris Jr. and took over the lead. Kisling moved into second and set off after Wilson but Aaron had a strong line and Shane wasn’t able to cut into the lead as the final half of the race ran nonstop. Harris Jr. settled for third with Hillman and Jason Forehand making a nice advance up to fifth.

Adams won his fourth feature race of the year here in an event where for much of the event he didn’t seem to have the fastest car. However, Adams kept plugging away and eventually he found a line that allowed him to track down Mike Anderson for the win. Aric Lindberg led his first laps of the year with Mark Hanson and Paul Brust close behind as Adams and Anderson worked their way up from the fourth row. Hanson got up on the cushion and blew past Lindberg to take over the lead as he looked for his second straight win here. However, following a lap five restart Hanson got way high in turn four and it was a four wide battle for the lead with Anderson finding a hole to get to the front as Adams battled with Hanson and Dave Baxter.

With Anderson leading the way, Adams switched lanes on the track and was able to reel in Anderson and take over the lead. Anderson didn’t give up easily, but Adams eventually pulled away by several car lengths as he nailed down another win. Baxter and Hanson had a race long battle for third with Baxter prevailing and Jason Gross came from the rear of the pack to complete the top five.

Viltz stole his second win of the year here in the nonstop Midwest Modified feature when the top two runners got hung up in lapped traffic with just a couple of laps left and the waters parted for Viltz. Grant Southworth had taken the lead at the drop of the green and was fighting off Bloomer teammate Clark Swartz for most of the event with Viltz coming from the third row to move into the third spot. Bryce Johnson worked his way into fourth while Matt Leer and Tito Viltz raced back and forth for fifth.

Swartz continued to put the pressure on Southworth but Grant withstood every challenge while Viltz closed in to make it a  three car battle. With just a couple of laps left, the three front runners approached two cars running at the back of the pack. Just as Southworth and Swartz committed to move around the tailenders, they decided to go to the outside themselves and both of the top two cars found themselves trapped on the high side of the track. Viltz found an open lane on the low side and drove from third to first in one corner. A surprised Viltz held on for the last couple laps to earn the win, with the stunned Bloomer duo right behind him. Leer fought off Tito Viltz to complete the top five.

Hanestad won his first Street Stock feature race of the year at Rice Lake and became the seventh different winner in that class this season. The Street Stocks had a tough time of it tonight with many of the front runners managing to drive their way to the back of the pack as the yellow flew six times for various spins.

The first four laps saw the yellow fly four times as the Street Stocks were uncharacteristically pushy and reckless Saturday. When things finally settled down, it was the veteran Hanestad who had worked his way up into the lead as he got past Danny Richards to find the front. Richards wouldn’t go away however, and continued to pressure Hanestad for the point. The last four laps turned into yet another sprint after one final spin, and Hanestad held off all challenges for the win over Richards and a charging Doug Wojcik. Chanda Fjorden-Nord and Sam Fankhauser were next in line at the checkered.

Doug’s younger brother Nick dominated in the Pure Stocks once again as he drove to a track leading fifth feature win of the year. Bob Thompson led for the first few laps of the feature event as John Erickson closed in to challenge him. Tyler Wahlstrom, Wojcik and Nick Traynor also moved in to be a part of the feature battle. Wojcik was able to get to the inside of Erickson and take over the lead, and once the field settled down, Wojcik was then able to put some distance on the field.

An early stoppage triggered the red flag when Don Blanchette spin in turn four and was helped over on to his roof by the oncoming pack. Blanchette emerged from his car without injury.

Wojcik then pulled away from the field for the win with Wahlstrom muscling his way past Erickson on the final lap for third. Traynor and Thompson completed the top five.

Next Saturday night will be Scout Night at the track. All Scouts in uniform and under the age of sixteen and accompanied by an adult with be admitted free to the races. Dirt Track Supply will be the presenting sponsor for the evening and as well as racing in all five classes, the Northern Vintage Racing Cars will also be on hand for a performance. Race time is 6:30 p.m.
