Rice Lake Speedway Season Champions Crowned

By Ed Reichert

RICE LAKE, WI (August 28) - The 2010 regular season wrapped up at Rice Lake Speedway with the running of the Season Championship events along with the first-ever appearance of the UMSS Sprint Cars. Earning Season Championship honors were Kevin Adams, Shane Kisling, Matt Leer, Zach Manley and Dusty Brown. The UMSS winner was Brandon Allen.

Adams led all the way to earn a division best fifth feature win at the speedway this year; he took off from the pole and built up a sizable lead over Dave Baxter early. The battle was for third was between Dave Mayala and Scott Duval while Mike Anderson and Paul Brust charged forward from the fourth row. Brust and Anderson exchanged some paint in their battle and later they got together again and Paul Niznik was the innocent victim collected and ending his evening.

Adams continued to lead with Baxter comfortably in second while the race for third continued with Mayala fighting off Duval and Brust. Lap after lap, Duval moved to the high side and just about cleared Mayala, but Mayala continued to fight him off. With 14 laps complete, Mark Hanson rolled to a halt with a flat tire, setting up a six lap sprint to the finish.

Up front the leaders remained static while Anderson, who was relegated to the rear earlier in the race, steadily worked his way back up through the pack and was up to eighth on the final restart. Driving with a fire burning, the Colfax native went flying by drivers on the extreme high side of the track like he had an extra engine; he closed on the wad of cars battling for third and made another outside move to challenge Brust and Duval, who had both dispatched of Mayala.

While Adams drove home for the win, the group of drivers had caught second place running Baxter. While Baxter held on by inches, the high flying Anderson electrified the crowd and took third on the final go round with Brust and Duval completing the top five.

After a first lap spin, the WISSOTA Super Stocks ran a nonstop main event which featured a Shane Kisling and Jason Forehand shoot out for the win. Forehand edged ahead of polesitter Ben Hillman to take the early lead while Kisling settled into third. Behind them, Eric Olson and Shawn Huse raced side by side for position with Huse holding off Olson.

Kisling drove past Hillman for second, then closed on Forehand for the lead; he tried both high and low but wasn’t able to edge past Forehand. With about six laps left, Kisling found an opening down low off turn four and squeezed past Forehand on the low side, although Forehand stayed with him for nearly a full lap. In fact, it appeared that Forehand might be able to mount a return charge using the second lane, but just as he closed on Kisling, he twice had to deflect his line as the leaders got caught up with lapped traffic. Kisling used that to his advantage and drove on for his fifth feature win in a row in last eight days, and division best fifth at Rice Lake Speedway.

Manley started on the pole and led all the way for his division best fourth WISSOTA Street Stock feature win; he pulled away from the competition early and built a comfortable lead that wasn’t challenged during the event. Early on, two yellows for spins kept the field bunched, but after the event stayed under the green flag, Manley pulled away.

The best battle for position was for second; Jay Kesan held the spot for many laps until Doug Wojcik snuck under him. One lap later Kesan returned the favor and retook the spot, but the rookie Wojcik wasn’t done and he drove around Kesan in the late going to nail down the runner up honors. Completing the top five were Danny Richards and Chanda Fjorden Nord.

Leer led all the way to win the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature race, however, it got off to a slow start with two yellows for spins before one lap was completed. Once full out racing took place, Leer maintained a slight lead over Shane Halopka and Clark Swartz. Ryan Viltz moved in to challenge Swartz for third while Halopka tried to catch the leader. Halopka gradually closed the gap and during the last third of the race made a serious attempt to move into the lead. Halopka made a strong surge into turn three and got under Leer, but Leer cut him off abruptly and maintained the lead. Halopka lost a lot of momentum and wasn’t able to mount a serious challenge during the few laps that remained. Leer drove on for his third feature win of the year with Halopka, Swartz, Viltz and Mike Anderson trailing.

The Pure Stock feature got off to a rocky start when several drivers got crossed up in turn four on the opening lap causing a couple of very hard collisions. While all drivers were uninjured, Bob Thompson, Gunnar Watkins, Kyle Hunter, John Erickson and Nick Wojcik were eliminated before they had even completed a lap.

Dusty Brown took the lead on the restart and maintained that position during the entire 12 lap distance. After the scrambled restart, C.J. Wagner moved into second, but was challenged by Darwin Brown; they had a good battle for the spot before Darwin Brown drove by Wagner and secured the position.

At the finish, twin Ford Thunderbirds of Brown and Brown that brought home the honors; Dusty earned feature win number three while Wagner held off Nick Traynor for third with Matt Madsen next in line.
